OMAP4440
The OMAP4440 applications processor will sample in first quarter 2011, with production expected by the second half of 2011. These products are intended for high-volume wireless OEMs and ODMs and are not available through distributors.
Texas Instruments announced that the OMAP4440 applications processor enhancements deliver impressive performance improvements beyond the OMAP4430 processor, including a 1.25x increase in graphics performance, a 30 percent decrease in webpage load time, a 2x increase in 1080p video playback performance and clock speeds as fast as 1.5 GHz per ARM® Cortex™-A9 MPCore™. These marked performance advantages, along with other feature enhancements, reaffirm the OMAP™ 4 platform’s ability to drive today’s most coveted Smartphone and tablet user experiences, such as 1080p stereoscopic 3D (S3D), 1080p video conferencing and gesture recognition
Tegra processor
Semiconductor giant NVIDIA seems to be betting on ARM in the mobile market as a whitepaper published by the company hints at the introduction of Nvidia quad core processors
using on the technology from the Cambridge-based company.
The Tegra 3 is almost ready and the development of the Tegra 4 is already under way with Nvidia's CEO suggesting that there will be a new Tegra processor every year, not unlike what happens in the graphics segment. The Tegra 2 already features in the Advent Vega tablet and includes two ARM processor cores together with a GeForce graphics core.
Nvidia promises that dual core processors will run at least twice as far than their single core counterpart and significantly faster than the competition which will include models from Marvel, TI and Qualcomm. A quad core processor would require a thinner manufacturing process, probably down to 28nm, in order to keep power dissipation and consumption to a minimum.
Intel
INTEL announced this that Intel chips will be powering 35 tablet computers by the end of 2011. Otellini(CEO) was speaking at the Barclays Capital 2010 Global Technology Conference.
Intel listed 15 different brands of tablets that would be containing chips from the company including devices from Dell, Toshiba, Acer, Asus, and Motion Computing. During the address, Otellini said Intel would be supporting all “viable operating systems in the marketplace” specifically naming Windows, Android
(both Honeycomb and Froyo), and MeeGo.
Two versions of Intel’s Atom processors are going to deployed across the tablets: one codenamed Oak Trail and the other Moorestown. Oak Trail is Intel’s more PC-friendly chip that will offer high compatibility with peripheral devices. The Moorestown processor will be inside the more lightweight, mobile machines, but won’t be as compatible with PC-peripherals.
AMD "Bulldozer"
AMD is coming up with a new processor code named "Bulldozer". It is a dual-chip module approach. In traditional dual core processors, a thread using core 1 of a CPU will not be able to use core 2's resources. But in in this new aproach, this will be changed. Both the cores can be used to run the same thread. We expect to see AMD's all-new Bulldozer CPU early next year. It may be the first processor to offer consumers an octo-core solution. It will also be the first chip to use a new duplex approach to computing.
HTC and 3D
Though “Avatar” made 3D the most popular big screen experience leading into 2010, it seems the technology is set to make its small screen debut sometime in 2011, with Taiwanese smartphone vendor HTC Corp. reported to have a 3D display Android-based phone already in the works.
At this point, the rumors are still very much just that – rumors – but the firm has been advertising rather heavily for a bevy of 3D related R&D roles, with the firm putting heavy emphasis on all things pop-out-and-in-your-face. One job posting geared at engineers at the firm’s R&D center at the Research Triangle Park in North Carolina asks that applicants have “familiarity with 3D display and imaging technologies.” Specialist site 3D Radar reckons this means HTC is aggressively pushing forward with 3D displays which it could then apply to its Android or Windows Phone 7 device lines. It’s thought – though on what basis we just don’t know – that some of these could even tip up as early as February at Mobile World Congress.
Of course, 3D software is quite a different ballgame from 3D screens and whether HTC will manage to come up with a sleek and impressive looking product that won’t make people dizzy or require them to wear silly looking glasses remains to be seen – though the HTC “insiders” who purportedly spilled the beans to 3D Radar certainly believe in a 3D superphone before the end of 2011.
According to insiders at HTC, it could be planning to release a 3D Android superphone in time for Christmas 2011.
3D smartphone screens were first demonstrated at the Mobile World Congress 2010, most of which were created by chipmakers and looked unlikely to appear on handsets anytime soon. However, it seems like HTC could be plotting to lead the pack at February’s MWC 2011, by demonstrating some smartphone-ready 3D displays. HTC insiders state that they want be be at the front of the 3D race, and hint that we may even be seeing a 3D-ready Android device hitting the shelves in time for Christmas 2011. According to the anonymous tipsters, the manufacturer will be going beyond software, applying 3D to all aspects of their touchscreen technology.
Linux Display Server
Linux distributions are now planning to move to Wayland display server from the existing X server. Wayland will be lean and clean, since most of the infrastructure which was in the X server has already moved to the Linux kernel, so the work done by the X sever is redundant. Wayland will be just be a renderer and a compositor. The network transparency will be done by Wayland itself, but delegated to the clients. According the original author Kristian Høgsberg, the goal of Wayland is to provide a system in "every frame is perfect, by which I mean that applications will be able to control the rendering enough that we'll never see tearing, lag, redrawing or flicker". It is nice to hear, and waiting for it.
